"The Caspiana House is
regionally significant within the state in the area
of architecture. There are relatively few extant
structures in northwest Louisiana which date from as
far back as the mid-nineteenth century. Most of the
houses that survive from this period are
unpretentious farmhouses. Although the Caspiana
House is related to these houses by its
configuration, it has a fully developed Greek
Revival articulation which raises it to the level of
a plantation house. It is also unusual because it is
raised a full story above grade, which is seldom
seen in the hill country of northwest Louisiana. "

Other Information |
In 1977 the Caspiana House was
moved ten miles to its present site. The house was
donated to the LSU-Shreveport Pioneer Heritage
Center in order to save it. The present site on the
university campus gives the house a setting which is
open and park-like, though not agrarian. The house
is a classical revival cottage with a central hall
which is flanked by two large rooms in the front and
two small rooms in the rear. A small gallery runs
between the two rear rooms. The five-bay front
gallery runs the width of the facade. The pitched
roof, frame, single story house is raised a full
story above grade on brick piers. The two large
rooms are heated by relatively large fireplaces with
exterior end-wall chimneys. The decorative detail is
simple and derived wholly from the Greek Revival.
Features include aedicule motif mantels with plain
moldings and pilasters, shoulder molded doorways,
double paneled doors, a transom and side lights
around the front and rear doors in the hall, Doric
gallery posts with square molded capitals, and a
full entablature. The 9 over 9 windows reach almost
to the floor. Shutters have fixed louvers. Most of
the exterior walls have clapboard siding; however,
those walls which are under galleries have beaded
flushboard siding. The fact that the house has been
moved is not detrimental to its overall
significance. The house was not tied to its original
location by any historical associations. Moreover,
the house is regionally significant within the
state, so it does not depend upon its original site
for a context for its architectural significance.
Because the house was moved, all of the brick work
had to be replaced. However, each brick feature was
painstakingly constructed to duplicate the original.
The present brick piers, on which the house is
raised, are exactly the same height as the original
piers were in the old location. The present chimneys
are the same size and shape as the originals and are
in exactly the same configuration with respect to
